I entered this world on December 8th, 1956 in a Southwestern New Mexico town called Silver City. I grew up 8 miles east of there in a small village called Central. Central is a relatively new name for the village. It was originally named Santa Clara. The region has a long history which you can view in more detail if you follow this link. The economy of the region is supported primarily by mining. The oldest mine in the area was mined first by the region's Indians for Turquoise and then later by the Spaniards for Native Copper. The mine is an open pit copper mine that completely engulfed the original town of Santa Rita. In recent years the area's economy has been turning more and more to tourism. Silver City is known as the gateway to the Gila National Forest which is host to the first National Wilderness area in the United States. The Gila National Wilderness.
