Roger Smith

Dr. Smith is the current Director of the Geophysical Institute and has been working at the G.I. since 1984, when he came to study upper-atmospheric dynamics and auroral dynamics at high latitudes by optical methods. After 15 years of diligent research, he was appointed Director in 2000.

Dan Osborne

Dan is currently working at the Geophysical Institute as a Project Engineer. He came to work at the Geophysical Institute in 1970 to study Infrasound and, after pursuing other fields of research, finds himself again researching Infrasound.

Charles (Bucky) Wilson

Bucky currently works as a Professor of Physics while employed at the Geophysical Institute. He came to work at the G.I. in 1961 and studies Glaciology, cosmic rays and auroral-magnetic phenomena.

Larry Sweet

Larry last worked at the Geophysical Institute as the Alaska Synthetic Aperture RADAR Facility Operations Supervisor. He came to work at the G.I. in 1958, and retired 37 years later in 1995.

Bill Stringer

Bill studied Auroral Physics while he worked at the Geophysical Institute as an Associate Professor of Geophysics. He was employed for 30 years at the G.I., from 1967-1997.

Jim Baldrige

Jim was employed at the Geophysical Institute from 1976-1993. Previous to his employment at the G.I., he worked at the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. At the Geophysical Institute, he was a Senior Programmer/Analyst who worked with real-time computer instrumentation.

Steven Estes

Steven is currently working at the Geophysical Institute as a Senior Project Engineer. He has been studying seismology since he came to work at the G.I. in 1975.

Enid Cutler

Enid is the wife of Dr. Howard Culter, who served the University of Alaska System for several years. Dr. Cutler served as the UA Vice President of Academic Affairs from 1962-1966, and as UAF's first Chancellor, from 1976-1981. After 1981, he remained active in the Fairbanks University and community until his death in 1995.

John Miller

John worked at the Geophysical Institute from 1971-1993 and most recently received the title of Adjunct Applications Engineer, Emeritus. During his employment at the Geophysical Institute John researched fileds from aerospace applications of remote-sensing technology to resource management and assessment of geophysical hazards in the Arctic and Subarctic.

Syun-Ichi Akasofu

Dr. Akasofu is the current Director of the International Arctic research Center. He came to work at the Geophysical Institute in 1958, was named director of the G.I. in 1986 and transferred to IARC in 2000. Dr. Akasofu is a Space Physicist whi, in his scientific research, discovered Auroral Substorms.
