(3rd October 2002)

The Federal Aviation Administation (FAA) has recognized it's In-Flight Icing
Product Development Team (IFIPDT)
, including UAF/GI's Dr. Jeff Tilley, as
the winners of the 2002 Excellence in Aviation Award. Dr. Tilley's role on
the IFIPDT is to help develop new algorithms and techniques for real-time
diagnosis and forecasting of in-flight icing conditions for Alaska and
vicinity.

The current UAF icing algorithm for Alaska is based on the newly operational
Current Icing Potential (CIP) product developed primarily at the National
Center for Atmospheric Research. The UAF algorithm is modified to use
different numerical weather prediction model and satellite inputs from the
CIP, taking advantage of polar orbiting satellite downlinks to a ground
station at UAF.

The algorithm is run twice daily for forecast lengths up to 18 hours,
depending on the area. Sample experimental products developed from this
work, as well as a description of the products, can be found on

Congratulations to Jeff and the Mesoscale group.
