Why two web pages for Atmospheric Sciences?
As of the summer of 2005, we have split the Atmospheric Sciences web page into two components, the Academic and Research pages. This was done to better reflect the complex organizational structure that describes the academic and the research components of our work at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
At UAF, research is done through Institutes and not through departments as is so commonly done at universities in the US. The Atmospheric Sciences research group is part of the Geophysical Institute (GI), which has various other research groups (e.g. Space Physics). The scientists in the GI Atmospheric Science (Research) group may be affiliated with an academic unit (e.g. Atmospheric Sciences or Chemistry, which are part of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics) or they may have a full time appointment in the Geophysical Institute.
Faculty in the Atmospheric Sciences academic group can be affiliated with any of the research institutes on campus and currently we have faculty with research appointments in the GI and with the International Arctic Research Center (IARC).
