Paul McCarthy received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of Guelph, Canada. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Western Ontario from 1996-1999 before joining the faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he is currently Associate Professor of Geology. His research interests include paleopedology (study of fossil soils), fluvial sedimentology, nonmarine sequence stratigraphy and paleoenvironmental reconstruction of alluvial deposits, primarily in Cretaceous rocks of western Canada and Alaska. His current research focuses on detailed paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions of Cretaceous high latitude paleoenvironments. Paul is a member of the International Association of Sedimentologists, Society for Sedimentary Geology, Geological Society of America, Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, Soil Science Society of America, The Clay Minerals Society and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. He has served on the editorial boards of several geological journals and is currently editor of the Journal of Sedimentary Research.
McCarthy is serving as a STEP Science Instructor in 2008, when the featured topic is Earth Science.
