Franz Meyer’s main research interest is the development of remote sensing techniques— advanced SAR, InSAR, PS-InSAR, and PolInSAR—and their application to geophysical problems. He is interested in the application of SAR and InSAR to studies of surface deformation, coastal change, tropospheric and ionospheric mapping, and permafrost change.

In the past he worked with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and taught at the Technical University of Munich. He currently teaches SAR, InSAR, and Statistics at UAF and in collaboration with the George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. In his research work he uses his expertise in the theory and application of Synthetic Aperture Radar techniques for studying the dynamics of the troposphere and the ionosphere, for monitoring natural hazards (volcanoes, earthquakes, glaciers, etc.), and for mapping of slow surface motion (land subsidence, landslides). Together with international partners he also contributes to the development of new processing methods for current and future SAR satellites (e.g. TerraSAR-X, ALOS PALSAR, TanDEM-X, Radarsat-2, etc.). Besides SAR, he has a sound education in Stereo-Photogrammetry, Signal and Image Processing, Astronomical & Physical Geodesy, Mathematics, and Statistics.
