The Partial Lunar Eclipse

The lunar eclipse of Monday, September 26, was a disappointment to observers. Though we had not realized it beforehand, the eclipse was only penumbral--the earth only partially blocked sunlight from reaching the moon. Consequently the ef£ect was so small that it could easily have gone unnoticed.
