David B. Stone
Professor of Geophysics
University of Keele North Staffordshire '56, B.A.; University of Newcastle upon Tyne '63, Ph.D.
Dr. Stone's current research interests are in paleomagnetism and tectonics and the application of geophysical techniques to any problems of interest. His ongoing paleomagnetic studies include work on: tectonostratigraphic terranes bordering the north Pacific and Arctic oceans and their paleogeographies; the application of paleomagnetic techniques to paleoclimate studies in loess and lake sediments; using lake sediments to search for records of great earthquakes and volcanic eruptions; investigatihg the behavior of the geomagnetic field during polarity reversals; experiments and speculations on the role of the geomagnetic field in animal navigation. His other ongoing research includes the use of seismic, gravity and magnetic methods to study the structures of accreted terranes.
