This is a collaborative study with the paleomagnetic laboratory at the Northeast Interdisciplinary Scientific research Institute in Magadan, Russia. The paleomagnetic studies involved joint sampling of the Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic belt of Late Cretaceous age in eastern Chukotka, the sharing of samples collected earlier by our Russian collaborators from exposures of the belt near Lake Elgygytgyn, an impact structure about 4 my old, and collections made by our Magadan colleagues near Magadan. From the paleomagnetic record seen in these rocks we hope to be able to better resolve the late Mesozoic polar wander path for parts of Northeast Russia. At the present time there is a large discrepancy between the polar wander paths developed by Russian scientists, and those built up by reconstructing global paleogeographies.
