Opportunities for Graduate and Undergraduate Research

Alaska offers unparalleled opportunities for graduate students to be involved in research in a dynamic geological setting. The Tectonics and Sedimentation Group conducts field-based studies throughout Alaska and in the Russian Far East. Graduate research opportunities exist in carbonate and clastic sedimentology, structural geology, paleomagnetism, and geochronology. Many of these projects are interdisciplinary, involving several faculty and graduate students.

Here are links to summaries of a few potential graduate student projects and examples of past projects.

There also are frequent opportunities for UAF undergraduates to do research with faculty during the school year and during the summer. These studies can involve both field and laboratory studies.

The Geophysical Institute also operates a Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students that offers research opportunities in both geology and geophysics for students from around the country. For more information, contact Dr. Paul Layer or Dr. Doug Christensen.
