Paleomagnetism

In many ways the label "Paleomagnetism" is misleading, since although it is the main theme of our research, is not the only branch of geophysics that we work in. The breadth of topics covered by the various theses listed below is a good indicator of the interdisciplinary nature of our interests.

Paleomagnetic studies in Alaska were one of the triggers for the whole concept of tectonostratigraphic terranes formulated by David Jones and others. The paleomagnetics laboratory in Fairbanks, which was established in 1966, has been involved in paleomagnetic measurements since its inception. Initially most studies were aimed at understanding the behavior of the geomagnetic field, particularly paleosecular variation, then moved into trying to unravel the travel histories of the various Alaskan terranes. Since that time we have added Northeastern Russia to our areas of study, and investigated the uses of paleomagnetic techniques in looking for indicators of paleoclimate changes and catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions and major earthquakes.

In addition to paleomagnetism we are also involved in other geophysical studies. These include gravity and magnetic surveys and modeling of the Novarupta area of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes near Katmai, and the Okpilak batholith in northeastern Alaska, as well as attempts to model the deep structure under the Bering strait and parts of Northeastern Russia.
