Black Rapids Glacier trip: Day 2

(All photos by Ryan Shackleton and Sean Bemis.  Click images to enlarge)

When you awake to a morning like this, you know it's going to be a good day.

Our first camp in the morning (Tommy! and Nate were still in bed at this point.)

This random boulder on the glacier made a nice mid morning rest stop.  Too bad we had left our climbing shoes at home (bouldering in plastics proved to be rather difficult.)

Mt. McGinnis

Sean, Nate and Tommy! on top of one of the terminal moraines that feeds into the Black Rapids.  Mt. Shand is in the background.

A nice view up-glacier from the moraine.  Aurora peak is in the distance on the right side of the glacier.

Approaching Camp 2.  Aurora peak is the triangular one on the right.  The head of the Black Rapids looks like the end of the world since it's the only place where you can't see any mountains sticking up.

Here we are after stumbling into our second camp after a long slog.

Our second camp was right below a beautiful ice fall (below) on the south side of the glacier.  Mt. Shand is right across the valley from us.  Tommy! for scale.

The ~4000 ft face of Mt. Shand.

The icefall above our second camp.

Another view of our second camp with Aurora Peak in the background.
