Fractures and Folds in the northeastern Brooks Range, Alaska

The purpose of my thesis is to understand the relationship between fracturing and folding for a specific type of asymmetric fold in the northeastern Brooks Range, which have been interpreted as detachment folds (Wallace, 1993).  The first step in understanding the relationship between fracturing and folding is to examine the mechanical stratigraphy in a relatively undeformed stratigraphic section in order to determine the relationship between fracture character, orientation and spacing within each mechanical package.  The second part of this study will examine fracture character and distribution within these folds in order to understand the kinematic evolution of the folds and fractures.
