Employment Types

There are multiple types of employment at the university as described below.

 

Employment Types

Nonexempt Jobs that are covered by the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act, paid by the hour, and are eligible for approved overtime.

Exempt Salaried jobs are exempt from overtime and may require work beyond 40 hours per week.

Student Nonexempt in nature, these jobs are available exclusively to University of Alaska students meeting specific enrollment criteria.

Temporary Either exempt or nonexempt in nature, these jobs are expected to exist for a short period of time, are not eligible for University benefits, and usually have an identified date when the job is expected to end.

Regular Either exempt or nonexempt in nature, these jobs are expected to continue from one fiscal year to the next and are eligible for all University benefits including health insurance, pension, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability, paid leave, etc.

Term Either exempt or nonexempt in nature, these jobs are created for an anticipated length of time or completion of a project. The actual duration of the work assignment is contingent upon funding and the position will end as funding is depleted. These jobs are eligible for University benefits including health insurance, pension, retirement, life insurance, long-term disability, paid leave, etc., but are not eligible for layoff benefits.

Faculty Exempt in nature, these salaried jobs require academic or special academic rank and are not eligible for overtime.

Temporary Exempt in nature, these jobs provide instructional/teaching duties on a temporary basis.

Union Either exempt or nonexempt in nature, these jobs are covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
