Teacher and Student Projects

A number of teachers and students have create projects as a consequence of their participation in ALISON.

Teachers

Ron Reihl is a cofounder of the ALISON program and a Physical Science teacher at Tanana Middle School (retired - 2005). In winter 2001-02 a school district grant allowed him to collaborate with science teachers from two other middle schools on snow and ice activities they wanted to conduct with their students. Each teacher was able to take students to field study sites to make snow temperature measurements using remote sensing technology (CBLs and digital thermometers) and snow density measurement using sampling tubes and electronic balances.

Ron created two Power Point presentations documenting his students activities at Aurora Pond in Fairbanks AK. The Tanana Middle School presentation shows the trip to Aurora Pond in March 2002 by Ron's Tanana Middle School class. The Middle School Project presentation concerns the season long project his class did at Aurora Pond in winter 2003 with Sarah Drew's (Ryan Middle School) and Carol Scott's (Randy Smith Middle School) students.

Todd Hindman (Anvil City Science Academy, Nome) has create a Changes in the North presentation based on materials developed by Martin Jeffries. This presentation shows some of the changes in the cryosphere in the Arctic.

Cheryl Abbott (Wasilla) and Marc Swanson (Seward) have written an article for the National Science Teachers Association journal "The Science Teacher" (April/May 2006). Read A Rewarding Partnership to learn about their thoughts on their ALISON experience.

Students

Todd Hindman's 2004-05 class at Anvil City Science Academy in Nome AK created a short video showing how they set up their ALISON site on the Anvil City Science Academy Pond and the measurements they made there throughout the winter.

Some of Sharon Strick's middle school students at Jimmy Huntington School in Huslia AK, made a short DVD movie about their experiences doing ALISON measurements at Richard's Spring Camp Lake. This project has been submitted to the Alaska Society for Technology in Education iDidaMovie 2006 contest.

Patty Gallego's 3-5 grad ecology class in Healy made a number of short videos.

Lois and Olivia Vent, two of Geoff Johnson's students in Huslia created a short video about their ALISON experience.
