Hajo Eicken celebrates the successful retrieval of an ice core from the drill hole. Notice that the ice core has been lassoed to lift it out of the drill hole. The ice core is supposed to come out of the hole inside the corer barrel, but we have been having trouble with the core catchers not functioning properly. Consequently, when the corer barrel has been lifted out of the hole, the core has remained in the hole. So, we have been resorting to an old, tried and true method: the lassoe. It's very effective, but also laborious and time consuming.
