Trip Journal: Martin and Kim visits Kenai

13 January 2005

Martin demonstrates some ALISON equipment for Cheryl Schey's class.

Cold and windy weather on Thursday 13 January also stymied our plan to take Cheryl Schey's students to Marathon Pond to make measurements and collect snow samples. Instead, we practiced using the snow probes and samplers just outside Cheryl's classroom at Kenai Middle School. Then, when school finished at 2:30 pm, Cheryl went out to Marathon Pond with us for a personal lesson in making measurements and taking samples on the ice.

Marathon Pond is City of Kenai property that is leased by the University of Alaska Anchorage for its Firefighting and Safety program (PRISM). Cheryl deserves applause for patiently working through the bureaucratic maze required to obtain permission to use the pond.
