The North Pole study site is reminiscent of many of the Poker Flat ponds that we monitor – it is a flooded gravel pit that owes its origin to construction, perhaps of the North Pole High School that stands just a few tens of metres away. While it is conveniently located on the school grounds, it is also within earshot of the roar of the North Pole refinery. The coordinates of Patriots Pond, as we have named it, are 64.7453°N, 147.3707°W.
