Trip Journal: Marc's visits Sterling

Another wet day in Seward. There is not much to do during a wet day in Seward, especially during the winter, so I basically just lounged around in the room until about noon. I then drove the two hours to Sterling.

It was a nice, bright warm afternoon in Sterling. I spent about an hour talking to Allan Miller's 5th/6th grade class. They were most entertaining and attentive.

After the school day finished, Allan and I went to his house to set up on the lake behind it. The steep path down to the pond was most treacherous. We both almost wiped out at least once. Drilling the holes went really fast due to the warm weather and warm ice. There was no snow on the ice, just lots of slush and water. It actually wasn't too bad sticking my hand in the ice to take the depth measurements. That is usually my least favorite part of putting in sites. We put in two TWITs and a thermistor array. Ice depths were 31.6 cm (at the 0 m TWIT) and 36.5 cm (At the 100 m TWIT). It was 32.8 cm at thermistor. Surprisingly, there was no snow ice.

After putting in the site I drove to Soldotna and went to bed.
