The Design Services team provides large-format printing, custom graphic design, website, desktop publishing and other services to the Geophysical Institute and to other UAF departments. Our skilled staff can help showcase your research in a professional and visually appealing way.
We offer same-day service for most poster printing, scanning, and color printing/copying projects.

Graphic Design and Publications
Our graphic designers can create custom logos and illustrations for your program or project. We can assist with development of product and/or program branding, create website banners, and assist with publication design and development.
Using Adobe InDesign, the industry standard for desktop publishing, we can create publications ranging from flyers and brochures to newsletters, conference proceedings and books. In addition to performing the layout work on your projects, we will obtain bids for printing and binding from local or out-of-state vendors and act as liaisons with those vendors to obtain the product you need, on time and within budget.

Website Development
The Geophysical Institute’s website has been redesigned, and is now powered by Drupal, a content management system that provides a user-friendly interface to simplify website development and maintenance. A variety of Drupal training opportunities are offered periodically to equip GI faculty, staff and students to perform maintenance on their group or department pages. for online help.
Design Services staff are equipped to assist with website development in other content management systems (such as Roxon and Joomla!) as well as Dreamweaver. They use powerful design programs to create custom appearances (banners, backgrounds) for new websites, and work in tandem with the Computer Resource Center to implement these features on your websites.

Poster Printing
Our HP DesignJet z6100ps printer can provide outstanding image quality and durability, with accurate, fade-resistant color on projects up to 58 inches wide. We can print on a variety of media, from bond paper, to photo-quality paper, to fabrics and canvas.
In most cases, we can provide same-day poster printing services. Our standard rate is $9 per square foot. Contact us for a quote on special media. Download our rate sheet for pricing on other printing services offered.

Business Cards
To order GI or ASF business cards, download and complete the Business Card Order Form. Obtain authorization from your supervisor (signature required), then submit the form to the GI Director’s Office for final approval. Once approved, the form will be routed to Design Services and your order will be placed immediately.
Most business card orders are filled within two weeks, however, if you need the cards sooner, please let us know your deadline so we can expedite the order.

Get GI & UAF Logos and Letterhead
Official logos and letterhead for the Geophysical Institute may be used for GI business only. The logos and letterhead may not be used for non-official or personal interests. You may access the GI logo and letterhead via the links below, after logging in with your GI username and password.

The correct version of the UAF logo features in large bold print the word ALASKA. There is an older version of the UAF logo featuring instead the word FAIRBANKS in large bold print. That older version of the logo should not be used. You may download correct versions of the UAF logo at the link below.
Training and Tech Support
Design Services staff are available to answer technical questions related to the services offered and provide support related to the Adobe Creative Suite of publishing and graphic design software.To help GI groups develop the ability to manage their GI web pages, Design Services collaborates with the Computer Resource Center to provide free Drupal training for GI faculty, staff and students.

When working within web pages, you may need to have the proper code...
- About.com ASCII/Greek letters - Use the codes given inside of your HTML to display proper letters like beta {β}, theta (θ} and psi {ψ}
- Here are a few html code items that are useful when laying out a Drupal page:

When you want a line return in your text that Drupal won't ignore, open the html edit window locate the area in your text where you want the return and use <p> </p>
When you want a soft line return use <br /> <br />
When you want more than one space in your text but the space bar won't let you, open the html edit window and use where you want the space. Using this multiple times will create multiple spaces.

Drupal Training
Design Services collaborates with the GI Computer Resource Center to provide free, entry-level and intermediate Drupal training for GI faculty, staff and students, to enable them to manage their own web pages on the Drupal-based GI website.

Rates and Estimates
Labor Rates
Design Services is not a recharge center. Therefore, labor rates vary depending upon who performs the work. The labor rate for each individual is equivalent to the hourly cost of that person’s time (including benefits). Currently, rates range from $45 to $62 per hour. All labor-related projects incur a half-hour minimum charge. Lengthy projects incur charges based on actual time, rounded up to the nearest quarter-hour.

Poster Printing Rates
Poster Printing is
typically $9 per square foot. Special poster printing promotions are
offered for major conferences and events (i.e. AGU, Campus Research Day,
etc.). Limited quick-copy printing is available. Download our rate sheet for rates on the most frequently-requested printing services.
Canvas Printing and Stretching Rates
Turn
your photos into great gifts and wall art. Design Services has recently
added canvas printing and stretching to the services we offer. See
examples of our stretched canvases on display on the second floor of the
Elvey building. Licensed art may also be obtained through Design
Services for an additional fee.

Core Services
A provision for limited core services is available for GI administrative offices and Fund-1 projects. Core services are not billable to the requesting department, but are absorbed by the Geophysical Institute’s fund 1 budget. To qualify as a core service, the project or task requested must be critical to the operations of the requesting department. Depending on the project, core services may be capped at a certain number of hours, beyond which, the requesting department must absorb remaining costs at standard labor rates.
