Human Resources

The Human Resources Office at the Geophysical Institute performs a wide variety of personnel and payroll functions for both the Geophysical Institute and International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The Geophysical Institute was established by an Act of Congress in 1946 and has earned an international reputation for studying the earth and its physical environment at high latitudes and training students in related disciplines. It is one of the few institutes in the country where scientists study a whole spectrum of geophysical processes ranging from the center of the earth to the center of the sun and beyond. A large part of the success of the Institute is attributable to the support staff and their expert services including machine and electronic shops, a research library, and laboratories. The International Arctic Research was established in 1999 for the purpose of promoting international cooperation and coordination of arctic climate change research. It is a place where scientists from around the world can work together to study arctic climate change, where we explore the causes of arctic climate change and try to reduce uncertainty of climate change prediction.

Timesheets

Changes to the Processing of GI Time Sheets:

  • If you are exempt staff, a graduate student that is not charging to a work order, a faculty member, or a post doc you will no longer need to turn in a time sheet. You should have already seen your grant manager or your PPA to straighten out your labor charges.

  • If you are non-exempt staff, an undergraduate student, or temporary employee, you will need to turn in a time sheet every two weeks.

  • UAF is not implementing the web time entry (WTE) time sheet system that will go into effect R07. You will need to access your time sheet at UAOnline, https://uaonline.alaska.edu/. You will log into UAOnline with your user ID and password. Once you have logged in you will need to access your time sheet. The time sheet will automatically populate with the run that is due next. Once you have accessed the time sheet that you are turning in you will need to put in your hours and submit for approval.

  • If you are a supervisor that is approving time sheets for a non-exempt staff member, temporary staff member, or an undergraduate student, you will need to access the time sheets that have been turned in and approve them.

  • If you are charging to a work order you will need to access your time sheet on the GI time sheet system https://patch.gi.alaska.edu/login.php and still turn the paper time sheet into your PPA that is now located in 611A1.

If you have any questions please contact your PPA at 474-5880 or mijohnson5 [at] alaska [dot] edu
