TThe GI has one evacuation chair that is located iside the Operations Office 615 directly across from the elevators. The purpose of the chair is to assist with evacuating people unable to walk down the stairs themselves in case of an emergency that renders the elevators unsafe. Example emergencies include fire and earthquake. Consider use of the chair not only for wheel-chair bound people, but for anyone temporarily on crutches or otherwise with limited mobility. An emergency situation could also cause an injury to someone, making it difficult or impossible for them to self-evacuate. Example injuries are smoke inhalation, broken bones due to falling objects or tripping.
The evacuation chairs are made by Evac+Chair. We have model 300H, which has a 300 pound capacity. It is designed to enable a single person to take another person down the stairs and out of the building without assistance. It is possible to use the chair without training and practice, but it will be a challenge. The Elvey stairwells are a bit narrow to easily maneuver the chair into the stairwells from the hallway. It's also a challenge moving the char from one flight of stairs to the next. If you share space with a mobility impaired person, it will be well worth your while to become acquainted with the evacuation chair.
