ASF awarded huge NASA contract
NASA announced on Friday, September 27 that it selected the University of Alaska Fairbanks to develop and operate the Synthetic Aperture Radar Distributed Active Archive Center for NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System. The DAAC is managed by the Alaska Satellite Facility at the Geophysical Institute at UAF.

The Geophysical Institute's GeoData Center is gearing up for its October First Friday art show. The show's title is "Earth, Wind & Fire" and coordinators are looking for work that fits this theme to showcase at the event.
Call for artwork submissions: "Earth, Wind and Fire" is next GeoData Center art show theme
Artwork submissions are sought for "Earth, Wind and Fire," a First Friday art show event hosted by the Geophysical Institute GeoData Center. The deadline for submissions of photographs, paintings, watercolors, furniture, carvings, sculptures, stained glass or woodwork is September 6, 2013.
Anyone is welcome to submit items for consideration for the art show. Selected art will be featured during a First Friday event on October 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. and displayed through the month of October 2013 in the GeoData Center.
New tool for reporting Alaska volcanic ash fall allows residents to assist scientific monitoring
Wilderness pilots, hikers, boaters and people in Alaskan communities can now report online to authorities if they witness falling ash or an ash cloud from anerupting volcano. The Alaska Volcano Observatoryhas developed a new online tool for reporting visible volcanic ash.

2013 GeeWiz team excels at fundraising: More than $12,000 raised for American Heart Association
Fourteen GeeWiz team members, representing the Geophysical Institute, showed their support for the American Heart Association by raising more than $12,200 and participating in the 2013 Heart Walk in Fairbanks.
The GeeWiz team raised the most money among the UAF teams and was the second-best at fundraising among all teams in the city.
"Views of the Boreal Forest" a success
More than 200 people visited the "Views of the Boreal Forest" First Friday Art Show on April 5. From 5 to 7 p.m., crowds perused artwork created by borough artistsans, including photography from researchers and staff at the Geophysical Institute and the International Arctic Research Center.
