Geophysical Institute Director retires
For more than a decade Roger Smith has presided over the Geophysical Institute, serving as the chief administrator for all aspects of the facility. With roughly 300 employees, a $30 million budget and active research underway, the job has proven it takes both mental and physical stamina. Despite challenges experienced in the position, the outgoing director feels he’s met the goals he set out to achieve at the start of his administration.
Offer your condolences to the Wilm family
Friends and former colleagues are saddened to learn the news of Helga Wilm’s passing. She was 71-years-old. Wilm provided 40 years of service to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She assisted four research directors at the university, playing an essential role in leadership as well as the development of major research projects since she began her career at UAF in 1968.
UAF to participate in 2011 Golden Days parade
This year marks the first Golden Days parade that will feature large-scale, unified University of Alaska Fairbanks participation. Though many university-affiliated groups have a long tradition of walking, riding, and dancing the approximate 2.7-mile-long parade route independently, all units will join forces from here on out.
GI Undergraduate Research Program
1. Relationship to UAF program
a. It is expected that UAF will develop curriculum courses for students to learn and
practice elements of research technique and methodology. The GI will provide
activities that build on the foundation laid by these classes.

Daniel Crevensten Endowment Fund
FAIRBANKS, Alaska—To honor the memory of long-time employee and supporter of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, family of the late Daniel Carey Crevensten have asked that interested individuals make a donation in Crevensten’s name to the Geophysical Institute Associates Endowment Fund—a fund Crevensten himself helped establish.
International Polar Year preparations
For Immediate Release
On Monday, Nov. 29 the University of Alaska Fairbanks held a workshop on the International Polar Year (IPY) at the Geophysical Institute. At the workshop faculty pooled ideas for possible roles UAF would take in IPY, designated from 2007—2008. During this year, scientists from around the world will conduct research to better understand all aspects of the Earth's polar regions.
