AGU travel grants provided by U.S. Permafrost Association

The U.S. Permafrost Association will provide six $500 travel grants for U.S.-based students and post-graduate researchers to attend the American Geophysical Union’s Fall Meeting in 2011. Applicants must be first author on a permafrost-related research presentation at AGU. Preference will be given to applicants who possess both U.S.P.A. and P.Y.R.N. memberships. Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.

 

The application is due midnight on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011.

Jessica Garron and Vicky Wolf of the Alaska Satellite Facility will present a session and host an exhibitor booth showcasing educational resources available to teachers.

Apply now for iTeach Weekends for Fall 2011.  iTeach Weekends is a four-day hands-on clinic in e-learning and educational technology that is suitable for those who want to enrich or supplement their face-to-face classes as well as those who are teaching at a distance, either in whole or in part. The clinic will occur over two weekends.

 

iTeach Weekends Fall 2011 will be held all-day October 15, 16, 29, and 30. All sessions will be at the UAF Center for Distance Education offices located in Fairbanks at 2175 University Avenue, south.

Fairbanks, Alaska—The Geophysical Institute’s Alaska Satellite Facility will celebrate 20 years since the first downlink of images from an earth-observing synthetic aperture radar satellite by hosting an Open House on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011. The event is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on campus.

Staff in the Geophysical Institute’s Outreach Office recently created Cryospheric Connection, an online professional development course for secondary teachers. The NASA-funded course is focused on permafrost and examines how this changing element of the cryosphere affects Earth as a whole.

Developed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute under contract to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development, the Alaska K-12 Science Curricular Initiative is designed to help teachers bring cutting-edge Alaska research to K-12 classrooms.
