Alaska Satellite Facility's Open House to celebrate 20 years of service

The Geophysical Institute’s Alaska Satellite Facility will celebrate 20 years since the first downlink of images from an earth-observing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite by hosting an Open House. The public is invited to tour facilities used for the acquisition, storage, processing and distribution of data acquired from polar-orbiting satellites, and to learn why satellite-borne earth observation is critical for monitoring change.

The Geophysical Institute’s newest research group has met consistently since its inception following Roger Smith’s memo on May 9. The Education group is working to develop a mission statement highlighting the core goals of service and broadening the impacts of research. As originally outlined in Smith’s memo, the GI’s eighth group will focus on the formation and sustainability of educational programs related to research done by GI faculty, personnel and students.

Investigations in Cyber-enabled Education, or ICE, is accepting applications for its fall 2011 Snow Cover course for educators. The science professional development course for teachers features a collaborative online network for teaching and learning about the role of snow in global climate. Participants interact with a suite of online lessons and are given access to snow-related data and resources appropriate for classroom use.

The Education group highlights service activities of the seven primary GI research groups in support of the institute’s educational mission. The group provides a forum for collaboration on education outreach so new ideas can be identified, nourished and developed. The group mission includes sharing information and expertise useful for advancing the broader impacts of GI-initiated research resulting in a breadth of education opportunities for the local, statewide and global community.

Fairbanks, Alaska—Fish are the primary foods for many animals in Alaska, including humans. Scientific research has revealed possible contaminates affecting fish in their natural habitats and risks associated with diets rich in fish.
