This morning, a NASA suborbital sounding rocket launched from Poker Flat Research Range into an aurora display over northern Alaska at 3:45 a.m. Alaska Standard Time, allowing researchers to gather more data about the power source behind pulsating auroras.

Range staff members will launch two NASA sounding rockets this season that will allow researchers to better understand winds of the upper atmosphere and aurora dynamics.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska—To honor the memory of long-time employee and supporter of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, family of the late Daniel Carey Crevensten have asked that interested individuals make a donation in Crevensten’s name to the Geophysical Institute Associates Endowment Fund—a fund Crevensten himself helped establish.

On Monday, Nov. 29 the University of Alaska Fairbanks held a workshop on the International Polar Year (IPY) at the Geophysical Institute. At the workshop faculty pooled ideas for possible roles UAF would take in IPY, designated from 2007—2008. During this year, scientists from around the world will conduct research to better understand all aspects of the Earth's polar regions.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska—The University of Alaska Fairbanks is revitalizing the West Ridge area of campus with an ambitious green space project. The university will celebrate the dedication of West Ridge Plaza on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Each year more than 20 kids head to Alaska through the Make a Wish Foundation, usually to take part in summer activities. But this year, things are operating a bit differently. Chelsea Hodges, a teenager from Virginia, is traveling across the continent to see the aurora in Alaska’s Interior during the heart of winter.

Have you ever descended into the depths of an Alaska cave? If not, you now have the opportunity to find out what's lurking in the dark. In recent years, cave explorers have traversed the caves of Southeast Alaska and what they've found has helped piece together the history of our state.

Daniel Monteith, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Alaska Southeast, will discuss how the information found within caves continually revises experts' ideas about the geology and human history of Alaska.
