“Aurora Sensations,” a film created using time-lapse photography of Alaska auroras set to ambient music, will be featured as part of the First Friday event at Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in downtown Fairbanks on September 7, 2012. The showings will be continuous from 5 to 8 p.m.

Immerse yourself in a sensational experience and join us for a special viewing of "Aurora Sensations," featuring the photography of Poul Jensen. View aurora time-lapse footage and Alaskan scenery composed with ambient music on Tuesday, July 31 in Butrovich 109A. The event begins at 12:30 p.m.
Jensen is a graduate student affiliated with the Space Physics group at the Geophysical Institute.
New GI Associate Director appointed
Geophysical Institute Director Bob McCoy announced the appointment of Richard Collins as a new GI Associate Director. Collins will assist the director with the development of new opportunities for GI, including the burgeoning unmanned aircraft program. This appointment will be quarter time, effective July 2012.
Auroral Alert issued for July 14-16
Geophysical Institute Aurora Forecaster Chuck Deehr has issued an Auroral Alert. The alert was spurred by a significant event located on the Sun facing Earth that took place on July 12. The effects of the event will begin to reach Earth early on July 14 GMT.
Auroral Alert issued for June 16-17
Geophysical Institute Aurora Forecaster Chuck Deehr has issued an Auroral Alert for June 16-17, 2012. A solar event occurred on June 14 that will lead to increased auroral activity that may be visible in southern Canada and the northern United States. Unfortunately, the nights are too bright to see the aurora in northern Canada, Alaska, Russia and Scandinavia right now.
