Iliamna Volcano, 2009.The Alaska Volcano Observatory has issued a Volcanic Activity Notice for Iliamna and Little Sitkin on Jan. 9, 2013. Volcano Alert Levels were updated to Normal and their Aviation Color Codes were updated to Green at both volcanoes.

Little Sitkin, 2012Little Sitkin Volcano, a 3,898-foot-stratovolcano near the end of the Aleutian Chain, is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest and scientists with the Alaska Volcano Observatory have put the volcano on color code yellow. According to the latest AVO report, a swarm of high-frequency earthquakes began at 7:15 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 29, 2012.

Visit the world-renowned Geophysical Institute, where scientists study everything from the center of Earth to the sun. Learn about the Alaska Satellite Facility's work with remote sensing data and polar-orbitting satellites and the Alaska Volcano Observatory's unique monitoring system for all volcanoes in the North Pacific. Visitors are welcome to tour both ASF and AVO with guides on Wednesdays, June 6 through August 22 at 2:30 p.m. Meet in the Elvey Building lobby.

 

Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more. There will be no tours on Wednesday, July 4, 2012.
