I am the Supervisor of the
Geophysical Institute's
Before then, my primary job as a Senior Systems Analyst was to manage the
Seismological Computing Facility
which provides computer support to the
Seismology and
Volcanology research groups,
the
Alaska Volcano Observatory,
and the
Alaska Earthquake Information Center,
I worked in the Institute's seismology lab from 1979 to 1995.
My professional interests include real-time data acquisition,
distributed computing, open system standards, and helping our
Institute to thrive and grow in social value. The latter,
of course, is the real challenge as it requires pro-active
political involvement as well as technical efforts.
Some of my recent technical work has involved learning and managing
two new operating systems, Sun's Solaris and Microsoft's Windows NT.
In my previous position I migrated the Seismological Computing Facility
from SunOS to Solaris. In my current position, among many other things,
I'm introducing the Computer Resource Center to
Windows NT and looking for
JAVA
and
VRML
programming projects. I was also the lead webweaver for the GI until 1999 and a member of the
Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility.
The graphics on the CRC pages exemplify what happens if you aren't careful to stick to Netscape's 216 undithered colors. Here's a great tool for selecting them.
It's too much trouble to maintain a list of cool sites and the net changes so fast and already connects so much that it's difficult to find time to return to anywhere without a specific reason. By the time I return to a subject there are likely to be lots of new relevant sites that I "should" visit. Thus, I used to make a lot more bookmarks; now, more often than not, I work through my local list of search engines. Promoting your Internet Presence so that it's available via search engines remains a frustrating challenge.

I'm involved in lots of things outside of my Geophysical Institute life (especially since being elected to the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly) which may have brought you to this page. For whatever reason, please contact me via the method of your choice.
