Girls on Ice is a unique, free, wilderness science education program for high school girls. Each year, a team of nine teenage girls and three instructors spend eleven days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers and alpine landscapes through scientific field studies with professional glaciologists and mountaineers. Applications for the summer 2014 program can be submitted now through January 31.
Two expeditions will be offered this year. Girls on Ice Alaska is designed specifically for Alaska and Pacific Northwest girls ages 15 to 18. The expedition runs from June 20 to July 1. The Girls on Ice North Cascades expedition is geared toward girls from all countries ages 15 to 18. This expedition runs from July 28 to August 8.
Girls are able to participate in this program tuition-free through small grants, gifts from individuals and generous support from the National Science Foundation, the Alaska Climate Science Center and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
