Research Computing Systems provides advanced computing, storage, data sharing solutions and research IT support to University of Alaska (UA) research communities, collaborators, and supporters. As System Support Specialist, you will consult with researchers, introduce systems to new users, manage software and compiler licenses, and support Linux system troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • You have experience assisting users identify, troubleshoot, and/or design IT solutions to meet unique research needs

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL NEED TO:

  • Consult with researchers and staff regarding RCS capabilities and procedures
  • Monitor, respond to, and resolve user inquiries
  • Maintain user system accounts and accounts database
  • Introduce high performance computing, data storage, and Linux server services and systems to new users
  • Manage Linux software and compiler licenses, installation, and maintenance
  • Monitor Linux systems and analyze trends to detect user and system performance issues
  • Resolve a wide variety of user issues and complex system failures by troubleshooting software, hardware, and network issues
  • Assist researchers with specialized Linux workstation support, system design, or troubleshooting
  • Provide 24 x 7 on-call support to mission critical systems on a rotating schedule
  • Act as the UA representative for national high-performance and high throughput computing and other digital services, opportunities, and resources to assist researchers, faculty, staff, and students advance scientific discovery
