From cdeehr at gi.alaska.edu Wed Jan 10 12:32:53 2007 From: cdeehr at gi.alaska.edu (Charles Deehr) Date: Wed Jan 10 12:36:24 2007 Subject: [gse-aa] Auroral Alert Update Message-ID: <000001c734fe$e63c7d90$ec1be589@Forcastle> There are two sources of high speed solar wind on the sun now. They have contributed to moderate auroral activity (Kp=3-5) during the periods Dec 19-25 and Jan 1-5. These "coronal holes" may be stable enough to last through the next three solar rotations. For those of you contemplating trips to the auroral zone this spring, optimal periods are therefore: Jan 15-22, Jan 29-Feb 6, Feb 12-19, Feb 25-Mar 2, Mar 11-18, and Mar 24-30. Note that there may be active regions appearing at any time and that a bright moon may detract from aurora watching during the second and fourth periods. Dr. Charles Deehr, Prof. Emer. Phys.
