Hajo Eicken - Associate Professor of Geophysics - Hajo's research interests include studies of the growth, evolution and properties of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic. He is particularly interested in determining how microscopic and macroscopic properties affect larger-scale sea-ice processes and its role in the climate system.
Recent work and research interests include:
- Field and remote-sensing studies of growth, development and dynamics
of sea ice in the Eurasian Arctic with special attention to sediment
transport by sea ice.
- The mass and energy balance of coastal ice covers in the Alaskan Arctic
based on ground observations and remote sensing.
- The evolution of pore and grain microstructure as a function of growth
conditions and thermal forcing, including the application of destructive
(thin-section imaging) and non-destructive (magnetic resonance imaging)
analysis techniques.
- Studies of brine and meltwater transport within Arctic sea ice through
the use of active and passive tracer techniques and remote sensing.
- The ecological significance of sea ice and its role as a habitat.
