Dr. Braun’s research includes a broad spectrum of applied remote sensing topics and respective methods. He is particularly interested in combining different earth observation data sources for quantitative and qualitative information retrieval with a focus on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Another research activity covers the integration of earth observation products into geophysical process models with strong emphasis on climate change applications.

Recent and ongoing work and research interests include:

  • large-scale mapping of ice dynamics from repeat SAR satellite imagery (Antarctic Peninsula, Himalaya, Svalbard, Alaska)
  • studying ice shelf break-up processes from multi-mission satellite data
  • glacier facies mapping from SAR time series
  • EO-supported glacier mass balance modeling and climate sensitivity experiments
  • data fusion in land use land cover classification (e.g. support vector machines or random forests)
  • multi-frequency and multi-polarized SAR imagery for land cover mapping
  • robust change detection algorithms for operational land use cover change mapping
