Andy MahoneyAndy Mahoney - PhD receipent in Snow, Ice and Permafrost Geophysics - My thesis work concentrates on the dynamics of Alaskan landfast sea ice as it forms, deforms and breaks up each year (see Coastal Sea Ice). This is motivated by the needs of coastal communities for understanding the processes leading to stability or instability of the ice cover and by recent changes that have been observed, which may be a response to climate change. I have conducted several seasons of field work and have installed a radar in Barrow to monitor the nearshore ice (Barrow Sea Ice Observatory). I also make use of synthetic aperture RADAR (SAR) and other remote sensing data to observe sea ice.
