Student Opportunities in Lidar ResearchThe lidar research laboratory provides a variety of educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students in science and engineering. Students can conduct research projects on a variety of topics ranging from engineering control systems to the aeronomy of the polar thermosphere. Students working on degrees in Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, and Physics have conducted projects at the laboratory. Each summer the laboratory hosts students who are participating in the Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the Geophysical Institute. The figure shows Messrs Tao Hou, M.S. Electrical Engineering 2002, and Timothy E. Stern, B.S. Physics 2005, (lower right and upper left respectively) working on a tunable dye laser that serves as the transmitter of a resonance lidar system (Photo by J. Pederson, GI UAF). |
