UAF Staff Council Unit 5 (Geophysical Institute)

The UAF Staff Council serves as the representative for non-organized (non-union) staff at the UAF campus and rural sites. Every two years, each unit elects new representatives and alternates to represent that unit on Staff Council. This December 2002, Unit 5 for the Geophysical Institute is up for election. 3 representatives and 3 alternates are selected. Those running have been asked to contribute a short statement. They are listed in alphabetic order.

I, Marcia Boyette, would like to be your alternate representative for Unit 5 at the UAF Staff Council. I have worked at the University for the past 24 years and currently work for ASF. I am very interested in the staff representation not only at GI but also at UAF. I am currently serving on the GI Staff Council. Since I have worked with several departments and organizations within the University, I feel I could represent UA staff well. I recently won the GI Community Service Award which I believe shows my dedication & commitment to many organizations within the Fairbanks community. I would be honored to represent Unit 5 staff at the UAF Staff Council.

Jean Crews, Technical Specialist, Alaska SAR Facility -

I have been with the UAF and the Alaska SAR Facility for 5 1/2 years. I have represented Unit 5 on UAF Staff Council for two years.

I am currently on the Staff Affairs committee and the Diversity and Tolerance committee - both sub-committees of the UAF Staff Council.

Gary Newman, Support Specialist, Computer Resource Center -

I offer to represent the Geophysical Institute on the UAF Staff Council. I have served in this capacity since June 2002, to fill a position vacated by another staff member. I have worked at the GI for just over 2 years at the Computer Resource Center, though have worked on campus as the "telephone-man" for FMUS back in the mid 1970's.

We work in a large community here at the University and I pledge to follow and lobby for issues that matter to us at the GI and to the campus as well. Big issues such as health care costs, adequate and fair wages, and non-discrimination are already on the table and need our attention. Smaller issues (to some), such as parking, will become important as we live with construction the north and south of us.

While we seem to get lots of spam (and all-gi) email, I also believe we could communicate amongst ourselves better on these and other issues. I will work to find ways to do this and am always open to issues and ideas of staff to make our work place a better environment.

As a 10-year+ employee at this university, and having worked for University Relations, the GI Information Office, and most recently the Alaska SAR Facility; I feel I have a broad perspective from which to offer my service and skills as a UAF Staff Council Representative.

I have served on the GI Employee Recognition Committe and regularly commit my time to volunteer service projects community-wide, including such activities as the KUAC Fundraiser, United Way, Love Inc., the Goldstream Valley Lions Club, and an outreach program mentoring students at Howard Luke Academy.

I'm looking forward to serving you with the same qualities of hard work and honesty that I devote to all enterprises.
