Field measurements

As part of the project a set of measurement sites has been established in the Chukchi Sea and Elson Lagoon fast ice, the ice of Imikpuk Lake and on the snow cover of the Tundra at the NSA-ARM site, to determine a set of parameters pertaining to the mass and energy balance of the snow and ice covers.

The photos below show the three ice sites.

Chukchi Sea fast ice site during installation of snow gauges and thermistor chain/arrays (Ice-growth season 99/00). Note the ridged fast ice in the background.

Elson Lagoon Site some time after installation of gauges and thermistor string (Ice-growth season 99/00). Note the absence of deformation features.

Imikpuk Lake Site just after installation of gauges, thermistor strings and snow depth sensor (ultrasonic transducer mounted on white frame at left; ice-growth season 99/00). Note the black bare lake ice in parts of the picture (foreground and background). Imikpuk Lake is a tundra lake located close to UIC-NARL that does not freeze to the bottom in winter.
