Ice push, June 26, 2000

The sequence of images above shows an ice push with the fast-ice cover shoved up onto the beach, breaking up and forming a ridge. Such events are driven by stresses that are transmitted from the offshore pack-ice, being forced against the coast by the prevailing wind. While the ice push shown above is a fairly moderate one, some of these events can be quite spectacular, with sea ice even riding up onto low coastal cliffs within a few hours time.
