  Volcanic Geomorphology

The main goals of my graduate school research were to gain an understanding of the large-scale geomorphology of volcanic landscapes, in paricular that of ignimbrite provinces. My projects have included the re-establishment of drainage patterns at Mt. Pinatubo, Philippines (MS thesis), origins of eolian and fluvial erosion at La Pacana, Chile (PhD chapter) and erosional structures at Valles Caldera, NM (PhD chapter).

  Science on Virtual Globes

I am an active evangelist for the use of virtual globes as visualization tools for scientific data. I'm seeking to establish a cross-discipline user community of scientific researchers and virtual globes developers, in order to further promote and improve these technologies. My own development involves the authoring of KML (Keyhole Markup Language) for use with volcano monitoring. The following links to a full list of my projects using Virtual Globes.

  Thermal Remote Sensing

As part of Alaska Volcano Observatory remote sensing group I'm helping test automated algorithms that detect changes in thermal activity at volcanoes and trigger email/SMS based alarms. Past studies have included using infrared cameras to study the structure of lava flows on Mt. Etna (PhD chapter) and fumaroles at Vulcano.
