Chinook Filesystem Change

Storage quotas and rates take effect July 1, 2018. PIs and projects over quota in $CENTER1 and $ARCHIVE need to reduce data volumes or contact RCS immediately. Inaction will result in project member inability to read or write data starting July 1, 2018.

Chinook will be taken offline for a short time on March 22, 2017, at 9:00AM AKDT to allow for the replacement of $CENTER on Chinook with a new Lustre filesystem. The new filesystem will be assigned the environment variable $CENTER1.

After the recent February 6-10 outage, the performance of $CENTER as accessed from Chinook was greatly reduced from its pre-outage state. This was a direct result of a software update that occurred on Chinook as part of the outage. We compiled a custom Lustre filesystem client for Chinook to resolve the immediate mount issues, but performance issues persisted. Due to continued issues with the $CENTER filesystem on Chinook, we are accelerating the deployment of $CENTER1 as a replacement for $CENTER on Chinook.

If you are currently using $CENTER solely from Chinook, then you should expect an identical copy of your $CENTER data to be available in $CENTER1 upon conclusion of this outage. You should not need to take any action beyond using the environment variable $CENTER1 instead of $CENTER.

If you are using $CENTER from any other system (e.g. Fish or the WRRB 004 Linux workstations) during the outage, please be aware that those file changes may not be reflected in $CENTER1 due to the nature of a hot backup. Please email for more information about this, and for instructions on how you can synchronize your data following this outage.

Please note that this outage only affects which parallel scratch filesystem is available on Chinook. No other system should be impacted during this outage, and $CENTER will remain available on Fish and any other RCS system it has been mounted on.
