Flipping Coins
We have to think to make decisions. Logical, orderly thinking is a demanding process, one that we sometimes prefer not to undertake. Like the soldier said when ordered to sort potatoes while on KP, "It's not the work I mind, but I hate making all those decisions."
Unfortunately, most of life's decisions are harder than sorting potatoes. It seems that one hardly ever has enough information on which to base a sound decision. If I ride my bicycle to work today, it might rain. How do I know if I will be better off to get more schooling or to pick a career job now? Will the development of a petrochemical industry in Fairbanks benefit or harm the community?
In almost every case we need more hard facts to base our decisions upon. Is it any wonder that we sometimes consult our astrologers or flip coins?
