Roof Insulation

After you read Building in the North you will also profit from reading a new pamphlet from the National Bureau of Standards called Making the Most of your Energy Dollars in Home Heating and Cooling; it is available from the U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

Unlike many American publications, this one actually considers Alaska as part of the United States and gives information on how to do things here as well as in other parts of the country.

The real shocker in the pamphlet is a scheme for calculating the amount of roof insulation you can afford to install. It considers the cost of insulation relative to the cost of electricity, heating oil and gas. Because the cost of electricity and fuel oil has gone so high in this area, it is now economical to install approximately two feet (yes feet, not inches) of mineral fiber insulation in your roof.
