Arctic Research Open House was definitely a hit

It was perfect weather for an outdoor/indoor Arctic Research Open House last Thursday! People visiting the Geophysical Institute were able to see themselves through a hyperspectral camera, learn about different types of ice, meet Pingo Peat the inflatable mammoth, watch a real lava demo, fly a drone with a flight simulator, and tons more!

A commentor on the GI Facebook page said "One of my favorite events every spring! Never disappoints. Family friendly and kid FOCUS (which I love!)."

Lots of Geophysical Institute groups were represented, including the Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration, Alaska Climate Research Center, Alaska Coastal Cooperative, Alaska Coastal Geoscience Lab, Alaska Earthquake Center, Alaska Satellite Facility, Alaska Space Grant Program, Alaska Volcano Observatory, Fairbanks Winter Air Study, High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, Hyperspectral Imaging Laboratory, Snow, Ice & Permafrost Group, Space Physics, and Wilson Alaska Technical Center.

Many staff members and students helped make this all go smoothly. It couldn’t have happened without you! Early estimates indicate that attendance this year outpaced the 2022 showing of approximately 400-500 attendees.
