GI hosts free outdoor walking tour

Looking for something to do outside while you socially distance? Since inside tours of the Geophysical Institute are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19, the GI now offers a free outdoor walking tour of notable GI-related stops on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

This self-guided tour highlights some key aspects of work underway at the GI that are represented by objects and information located outdoors. The tour will give you a glimpse into the work conducted at the Geophysical Institute and illuminate some of its rich history.

Since it was established by an Act of Congress in 1946, scientists at the Geophysical Institute have studied geophysical processes from the center of the Earth to the surface of the sun and beyond, turning data and observations into information useful for state, Arctic and national priorities.
